Serving the whole person

If there is one unifying vision for the Cathance Center project, it is that of filling needs beyond the immediate.

FHC will have engineers working here to plan, design and develop the tools for the future of neurosurgery.

The fitness center will promote exercise for health and total body wellness, which pay off in quality of life over time.

The property will continue to be used for community recreation, while inside there will be classes meeting to help broaden the horizon of the mind, preparing people to meet the future.

And when the time comes for further expansion at FHC, new production capacity and quality jobs will be added to the community, as well.

Physical, mental, spiritual

A person is not just one of these. We are all of these, and all must be nurtured for us to reach our full potential.

"Observation of my life to date shows that the larger the number for whom I work, the more positively effective I become. Thus, it is obvious that if I work always and only for all humanity, I will be optimally effective." -R. Buckminster Fuller

Quality over Quantity

In the field of neuroscience, there is little room for error. A careful quality of workmanship is the priority. Should our lives have less quality than our work? Obviously, no.

  • Our work says much about us, but we are more than our vocation.
  • Our avocations show our character as we bend them to our will.
  • Recreation occupies the body and frees the mind for thought.
  • Relationships expand our emotions beyond ourselves.
  • Spirituality undergirds and completes us, foundation and capstone.

A Winding River, A Fitting Symbol

Symbolism is a tricky thing. Sometimes a symbol better explains what you have to say than your words ever would. Other times it can seem restrictive since reality is more complex than the simple symbol. Our twisting river reminds us that the pathway to our goals may be full of zigs and zags, and the occasional doubling back. Still, the river always makes it to the sea.

The Twisting River

  • The name of the river is fitting. "Cat-hance" is our english pronunciation of the native indian word for crooked or twisting. They knew the switch-backs and windings of this long river.

Between Branches

  • The Cathance Center property is located between the east and west branches of the Cathance River. One corner of the southern boundary is the west branch.

The Long Way

  • Putting in a raft at the corner of the property, one could (mostly) paddle to the Bowdoinham Landing, which is the location of the FHC, Inc. corporate offices. What is a four mile drive, however, would turn into a trip of more than four times that distance. A winding way indeed. A portage and a section of rapids would keep the trip interesting, as well!
